Moving Together

Adaptive Sports Program New Mexico (ASPNM) today launches the heartfelt brand film “Moving Together” out of Valiant Pictures and director Alexandra Henry, casting much-needed visibility on the impact of access in the lives of those with mental and physical disabilities. Since 1985, the ASPNM has offered therapeutic recreational activities to children and adults alike. Today, ASPNM proudly offers a wide variety of adaptive sports year-round, including skiing, snowboarding, watersports, river rafting, yoga, rock climbing, and more.

Building the program proved no bunny slope; the film spotlights the dedicated skiing instruction team and athletes who benefit from such careful attention to their respective needs in the name of bridging access for every kind of skier. From instructors and volunteers who carefully accommodate each participant to the powder-loving enthusiasts who can once again partake in their favorite sport, ASPNM and Alexandra bring awareness to the clear emotional and physical well-being that can be provided by just having the resources to re-engage with a treasured pastime.

Alexandra spotlights athletes including skier and retired Army veteran Mark Whitson, who, after losing his leg in a roadside accident, was sidelined from skiing for 25 years. That is, until the ASPNM provided the tools and instruction required to reopen the slopes for Mark, where he can finally ski with his grandchildren and teach “ski-bike”--riding a ski with bike handlebars, for those in his situation--to other participants. Where disabled participants can at times assume a sport, or any activity, is permanently out of reach, ASP proves the right attention can accommodate even a hobby as extreme as skiing and snowboarding to anyone.
