greener days

The environment is a hot, topical issue, and I'm curious what we, as an industry whole, are doing to help the environment. What we are doing to reduce our impact on the earth's resources.
I'll share with you what I do everyday, I hope you will share, here, what you are doing.

I:
- use a travel mug to buy my coffee
- bring my lunch in tupperware
- store left overs in tupperware
- ask for less packaging if i do buy my lunch
- keep metal utensils at work, never get the plastic ones
- turn off all appliances when i'm done with them
- use environmentally friendly light bulbs
- use the microwave to reheat meals rather than the stove or oven
- bring strong hemp bags to put my groceries in
- when i do a quick trip and forget my hemp bags, i reuse the plastic bag they give me
- use used newsprint and embellish it by painting or drawing on top of it to wrap gifts
- re-use gift bags
- recycle all paper and plastic and metal
- buy quality used furniture
- repurpose or donate old clothes
- take local transit, purposely do not own a car
- buy locally grown produce whever possible
- have a low flow toilet
- low flow, high pressure shower head and taps
- turn the temperature down on heaters at night, pile on the sweaters in the winter
- talk about it

if i think of other things i do i'll post them.

here's one sight to check out: http://www.davidsuzuki.org/

looking forward to reading what you do.

I don't own a car either! My wife does, but we have been a one car family for 10 years. I actually hate driving.
I don't do nearly as much as you do, but here is what I do:
- I buy very little, if any, packaged food
- Walk to and from work every day. About 2.5 miles
- Don't own a TV
- Bike when I can't walk
- When printing, insist on soy ink and recycled paper, if possible
- recycle what can be recycled
- go to grocery 4-5 times a week, buying only what I need
- pretty low wattage bulbs throughout the house (40-60)

There might be more things, but I don't know. I rent, so some of the stuff here I have no control over.

I've decided I hate signatures.

Joseph- we rent as well, so we can't do things like compost... yet. we are on a waiting list to get into a truly evolved and progressive artist's co-op down by the water front. they have solar panels that heat the water, and an herb garden on the roof. which means we'll likely get to compost as well.
it's going to be so great, the love-ins and the composting. *sigh*
thank you for adding your efforts to the list!

erm, are you going to get to the issue of the experiment for the group? or will you continue to torture us for a little while?

I am hoping to post it today. I have to go scout a photo shoot location this morning and then I hope to finish up the essay. I hope I don't dissappoint.

I've decided I hate signatures.

Even my wife is waiting. We had a lot of fun reading all the answers. Until today we use the words "she shirt" and "festering corpses" from one of the submissions for certain situations.

Nice post! We should do a campaign together to promote green living and distribute it through a viral site.

I'm in! What did you have in mind? How would you like to proceed? (I'm a bit of a web-tard and don't know much about building a site that works or viral stuff, but I'm a quick learner and fully interested and commited) email me if you like, I won't be able to get to it until the changing of the guard here.

Let's write a brief first of all, so we are clear on the objectives. Who can write it?

Roughly in my view the brief is this:
Encourage people to adopt green practices. Raise general awareness and bring people to the website where they can learn more about the things they can do (or not do) to save our world as we know it.

i'll work on it during my lunch, in two hours, i've copied your brief to work with. get back to you this afternoon.

Ivan, I've tried emailing you through "feedback" but I'm suspicious that it isn't working properly.
I have a brief, should I post it here?

well, i've attached the working brief, and would love to know what your thoughts are on it. i'm a bit rusty with writing one, so i think it could use a different set of eyes. looking forward to hearing what you think.

I thought of a few extra things to add to my list:

- hang my laundry to dry
- wash my clothes etc. in cold water
- use energy efficient/ water efficient laundrymat
- use re-chargeable batteries for the electronics that require batteries
- refurbish my Mac, pimp it if you will, rather than buy brand new
